Update from February 7, 2023: It’s been a long time since we reported on the Fable reboot – but there was no news worth mentioning either. But now there is an exciting development: The authors of twistedvoxel.com have noticed that something has changed in the LinkedIn profile of Vijay Gill, the producer at Fable Studio Playground Games.
It says there that he regularly prepares and conducts game runs and build reviews from the Fable reboot for the most important stakeholders. Accordingly, the long-awaited RPG is now in a playable state. Gill has been part of Playground Games since October 2022, so it’s fair to assume the game hasn’t been at this stage for long. No engine change – rumor is not true
A rumor had also been circulating beforehand that the developers of the new Fable allegedly had to abandon their previous work in the customized Forza engine and switch to the Unreal Engine. However, this has been refuted – new job offers from the studio also refer to the use of the in-house engine, while various employees of the supporting studio Turn 10 work with the Forza engine on Fable. New Fable: Is the RPG coming soon? Why don’t we believe in it
Fable fans have been waiting for part 4 for a long time, but now there are more signs that development is still in the early stages.
Fable: Debut trailer for the sequel to the classic RPG
Microsoft announces Fable for PC and Xbox Series X. The well-known role-playing series, which was brought to life by developer legend Peter Molyneux, is being continued ten years after the last part. Playground Games, which most recently worked on the racing game series Forza Horizon within Microsoft Game Studios, is responsible for the development. A date has not yet been set. First scenes can be seen in the announcement trailer.
Original from September 6, 2022: Fans of the role-playing game series Fable have been waiting for a new part for over ten years, but at least there was a ray of hope in 2020: A return to the unique fantasy world of Albion was announced with a likeable trailer – a reboot of the Row. The people at Playground Games, who previously created Forza Horizon, are responsible for the whole thing. The fact that there has been practically no radio communication since the reveal is not exactly promising. But the vice president of Xbox Game Studios – Matt Booty – explains why there have been no insights.
Don’t show Fable until it’s finished – Microsoft listens to developers
At PAX West 2022, he said, among other things, that he would like to reveal the game further. “Part of my job is to back up the team,” Booty reveals. “The developers don’t want to show anything too soon before it’s done, but if there’s one game that kind of flipped that, where every time I see something I’m like, ‘We should show that’, it’s es Fable (buy now €33.80). Because there are so many cool things.”
But the “problem” is that Booty respects the developers’ wishes: “The team made it very clear that I can’t show anything until it’s ready.” (via IGN)

Fable in particular used to suffer from early revelations
So instead of showing a way too early version that gets changed again, the gameplay reveal is supposed to be in a fairly finished state. This is not new for Playground Games either: While Forza Horizon 5 was shown for the first time at E3 2021 in June, it was released in November of the same year. Especially for a game like Fable, it’s probably a good idea not to show something too early that doesn’t end up in the game later – longtime fans still remember the hype that Peter Molyneux (then studio head of Lionhead, the Fable developers ) just so the game couldn’t live up to what it promised.
Incidentally, the unusual choice of a racing studio for Fable initially struck Matt Booty as odd. But while the decision was “a bit of a head-scratcher” at first, the developers are said to have shown they’ve mastered Fable. Of course, having a Microsoft exec call one of their development teams competent doesn’t necessarily mean it, but it might reassure some of you waiting for Fable. By the way, that’s still a mystery for how long – as soon as there’s news, you’ll find out from us.
