Now the Game Boy and the Playstation 4 also had to believe it. In the list of best-selling consoles of all time, the Switch left both devices behind and is now in third place. Only the Nintendo DS and the Playstation 2 stand between the hybrid console and the title “most successful console of all time”. Nintendo’s new annual report once again reveals how immensely successful the switch is, almost six years after its release. And rightly so! Nintendo did everything right with the Switch.
Nintendo has learned from its mistakes
After the Wii U failed miserably and the 3DS was not able to land a mega hit despite respectable sales figures, quite a few experts saw the fate of Sega on Nintendo. Away from the hardware towards the pure publisher of own games for all platforms. But Nintendo remembered its strengths, bundled the resources of the handheld and console division and landed a huge success with the switch.
And there are several reasons for that: Nintendo has the most balanced hardware. While the technical capabilities of the Switch may seem ridiculously poor compared to the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X, the Switch hits the sweet spot of cheap to build, enough power for decent games, and a not-too-expensive retail price. Neither the PS5 nor the Xbox Series X can claim this combination.
The Nintendo Switch is superior to the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X in important respects
The Switch is profitable. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo makes money from every single console. And that from the start, while Sony and Microsoft pay more for every PS5 or Xbox Series X. This is also a strength of the switch. Nintendo can offer its console at a price that still seems reasonably affordable even in times of inflation and the energy crisis. Sony, on the other hand, had to increase the already hefty price of the Playstation 5, while Microsoft at least has an affordable model in its portfolio with the Xbox Series S.
The Switch is much more flexible than its competitors. Cloud gaming on the bus and train or at the campsite is still a utopia. You just throw the Switch in your backpack and off you go. If the television is occupied by the partner who is watching Germany’s next top model or the Champions League, then you simply snuggle up next to it with the switch.

It’s your own fault Pokemon games suck…
Our author is convinced: Pokemon fans have only themselves to blame for the poor quality of the Nintendo Switch games Pokemon Crimson & Crimson.
The Switch is unrivalled. Nintendo still has a distinct advantage in the race for console manufacturer supremacy. The Switch doesn’t compete with the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X. While many buyers will choose between Sony and Microsoft, the Switch can co-exist alongside the “big ones” as a second console or family device. There are no handheld versions of the Playstation or Xbox, and the Steam Deck is a nice niche product, but nothing more.
Viewed objectively, the Switch should actually be a colossal flop. In times of free-2-play mobile games on smartphones and mass phenomena like Roblox, which even runs on ten-year-old laptops, there is actually no reason for the core target group of children and young people to buy hardware, and their exclusive games often too years after publication still cost full price. That makes the huge success of the Switch all the more amazing. And the success story is obviously not over in the seventh year. As part of a new Nintendo Direct, we’ll find out what else Nintendo plans to do with the Switch in 2023.
