Roiland’s participation is reduced to voice acting, but he does not deal with plots.
In early 2023, it was revealed that Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland was accused of domestic violence and incarceration; pre-trial hearings are underway. Soon, almost all partners broke off relations with Roiland.
Fans of Rick and Morty and Roiland’s other projects are worried about how the series will change after Justin’s departure. According to The Hollywood Reporter sources, the changes are unlikely: Roiland has not been working on the series that he is credited with for a long time.
Here is what is described in the mini-investigation of the publication:
The first season of Rick and Morty was co-created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. When work on the second season began, Harmon seized the initiative: his team was responsible for the script, Roiland’s team for the art. Roiland himself had little interest in working on the second season and sat so far from the writers that he would need binoculars to see what was written on the board where the scripts are planned. After the start of work on the third season, Roiland almost stopped appearing in the offices where the show’s creators sat. Usually, the exceptions were when fan stars like Kanye West or porn star Riley Reid dropped in at the office. Harmon and Roiland’s relationship became extremely strained, but they still made a deal with Adult Swim for 70 episodes of Rick and Morty. Since then Roiland’s significant involvement in the creation of the series comes down to the voice acting of the character. He did not communicate with the scriptwriters for a long time. The situation is approximately the same in other Roiland series: The Other Side of the Earth and Koala Man. Sources believe that Roiland believed that as long as he voiced key characters, he would not be fired.
As noted by THR, after it became known about the charges against Roiland, colleagues shared several more stories about Justin’s inappropriate behavior. Roiland himself did not comment on either the allegations of domestic violence or the memories of colleagues.
