Preliminary projections are for 54.5 GW of new electricity generation capacity to be added to the US grid in 2023 this year. 54% of these capacities will come from solar energy. In second place with 17% will be energy storage systems. And for the first time in 30 years, two new nuclear power units will be put into operation.

Despite an upward trend over the past decade, utility solar capacity growth is down 23% in 2022 compared to 2021. Some of the projects delayed in 2022 are expected to start in 2023, when developers plan to install 29.1 GW of solar generation capacity in the US, more than double the current record (13.4 GW in 2021). In 2023, Texas (7.7 GW) and California (4.2 GW) will by far have the most new solar capacity installed, accounting for a combined 41% of planned new solar capacity.

The capacity of energy storage systems in the US has grown rapidly over the past couple of years. It is likely to more than double in 2023. The developers announced plans to add 9.4 GW of battery capacity to the existing 8.8 GW. Battery-based storage systems are increasingly being installed in wind and solar energy projects. Wind and solar are intermittent sources of generation, batteries can store excess electricity from wind and solar sources for later use. In 2023, 71% of new batteries are expected to be located in California and Texas, states with significant solar and wind capacity.
Developers plan to build 7.5 GW of new natural gas-fired capacity in 2023, 83% of which is combined cycle gas plants. Two of the largest natural gas power plants are expected to come online in 2023: the 1,836 MW Guernsey in Ohio and the 1,214 MW CPV Three Rivers Power Center in Illinois.

In 2023, it is planned to add 6.0 GW of wind power to the US grid. US annual wind capacity growth has begun to slow after a record increase of more than 14 GW in both 2020 and 2021. The largest amount of wind power capacity will be added in Texas in 2023 – 2.0 GW. The only offshore power plant expected to come online this year will be a 130 MW system in New York called South Fork Wind.

The two new nuclear reactors at the Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant in Georgia are scheduled to come online in 2023, a few years later than originally planned. The reactors, with a total capacity of 2.2 GW, are the first new nuclear units built in the US in more than 30 years.
