In the race for the ranks of the best-selling consoles in gaming history, Nintendo has now overtaken a tough competitor and is waving at him in the rear-view mirror.
It’s that time of the quarterly reports again and a good reason to take a close look at one or the other sales figure. This month shows that Nintendo has made good places and put a competitor in its place.
According to the current quarterly report, a whopping 122.55 million consoles were sold by the Nintendo Switch over its lifetime up to December 2022. This has now replaced the PlayStation 4 in third place among the most successful consoles – the Sony console “only” manages 117.2 million copies. At least theoretically, because there is a catch with the numbers: the last official number of PS4s sold dates back to August 2022. Since PS4 sales have more or less stagnated since the PS5 became more available, it is not unlikely that the lead of Nintendo Switch is still accurate – especially as the Switch continues to sell well.
Second place among the consoles is currently still difficult for the switch to reach, where the in-house handheld Nintendo DS is enthroned with 154.02 million copies. First place is occupied by the PlayStation 2 with 155 million.
Despite all the rumors about a successor, the switch should get a further boost in May. There is hardly any doubt that the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can trigger another run on the switch.
Speaking of games, the top three Nintendo titles on the Switch continue to be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (52.0M), followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons (41.6M) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ( 30.4 million).
