From 2006 to 2013 the series “Dexter”, loosely based on a series of novels by Jeff Lindsay, ran on the American channel Showtime. It was about the serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), who focused his murder instinct on those people who, in his opinion, deserved to die. The series also found many fans in this country, even if the series finale was not generally well received. A follow-up series called “Dexter: New Blood” was surprisingly announced in 2020, the ten episodes of which were broadcast in 2021/22 and which even became the most-watched series on Showtime. In Germany, “Dexter” is available on the streaming services Paramount+ and RTL+; Dexter: New Blood is available to watch on Paramount+, Sky Go and WOW. Due to the success and popularity of the two series, Showtime has now announced several spin-offs that will expand the “Dexter” universe.

Three new “Dexter” series!
The network appears to be looking to turn Dexter into its own franchise, which will be overseen by Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner on both the first four seasons of Dexter and New Blood. Specifically, there is talk of three different projects, one of which will be a direct sequel to “New Blood” (hereinafter spoilers for “Dexter: New Blood”!).
This new season of “New Blood” is set to follow Dexter’s son Harrison as he seeks a new life in New York after the death of his father. He will probably have to deal with demons similar to his father’s, as he seems to have a “dark companion” like his father. It sounds like the series is very similar to the original, just with completely different characters.
The second series will be a prequel called Dexter: Origins. In it, we meet young Dexter Morgan, fresh out of college and starting work as a forensic scientist in homicide. This offers the opportunity to have younger versions of well-known characters appear, such as Dexter’s sister Debra or his father Harry.
More serial killers, but Michael C. Hall is probably gone
The third new series idea in the “Dexter” universe aims to shed more light on some of the other serial killers that Dexter has dealt with throughout the series. One of the best known is certainly the “Trinity Killer” played by John Lithgow from the fourth season. Here there would be the possibility to knit a separate series around him and build him up as an anti-hero like Dexter.
Further details such as the cast or an exact start date are not yet available for any of the series. One can assume that in Germany they will be shown at Paramount+, among others. However, when asked whether Michael C. Hall will once again slip into the role of the popular serial killer, we can largely answer no. After all, he didn’t survive the New Blood finale and is definitely too old to play young Dexter. However, there is still the possibility of him appearing in visions or memories of his son in the sequel series. In the same way, Dexter’s own father had always made an appearance.
