Shrek is without a doubt a cult figure on the internet. Four films, two spin-offs and a seemingly endless amount of memes have firmly established the brand around the ogre in pop culture. But while Puss in Boots 2, the second spin-off, recently came to the cinema, the fourth Shrek film was more than twelve years ago. Despite much speculation, it was relatively quiet for years about a possible fifth part. But a recent interview by actor Antonio Banderas might offer some hope. Banderas voices Puss in Boots in the English version of the film.
Are we seeing Shrek 5?
Speaking to Radiotimes.com when asked about the status of Puss in Boots sequels and the appearance of familiar characters, Banderas said: “It’s not up to me, normally sequels are audience driven.
[Aber] if they go to the cinema in large numbers, as they are currently doing with Puss in Boots, then that could potentially lead to another Puss in Boots movie. Or, as the film suggests towards the end when you watch “Far Far Away,” they visit some old friends at the end of the film – maybe Shrek will come back. I don’t know, there’s a lot of different ways these characters can go on, but it’s not up to me, it’s up to the audience somewhere.”
Banderas hinted at Shrek’s return to cinemas during the Red Sea Film Festival in December. There is currently no official announcement or confirmation from Dreamworks. But both the positive reviews for the film and the financial success of the second strip should not have escaped the company. Screenrant stresses that the fifth Shrek movie seems to be in the works since 2016.
Eddie Murphy had announced at the time that a script for the film was ready. Comicbookmovie throws up the option that Shrek 5 could possibly be announced after the Oscars. After all, Puss in Boots 2 was nominated in the category “Best Animated Feature Film”.
