As expected, Microsoft held an event to announce new features for the Bing search engine and the Edge browser, built on the neural network that powers Open AI’s ChatGPT advanced AI chatbot. The software giant promised that these two products will provide a new experience when browsing the web and searching for information on the Internet.
As part of the presentation, Microsoft representatives said that the Internet search paradigm has not changed for 20 years, and about half of the total number of search queries do not lead users to the information they are interested in. The company is confident that the advent of conversational AI will change the situation, due to which users will be able to find the data they are interested in much faster.
The “new Bing,” as Microsoft calls it, features an intelligent chatbot that allows users to ask questions and get answers in natural language. The basis of this feature was the updated language model, which was created by developers from Open AI and was previously used in the ChatGPT chat bot. We are talking about an improved version of the GPT-3.5 model, which Microsoft called the Prometheus Model. This algorithm is more powerful than the usual GPT-3.5, and the search engine using it can quickly find relevant information and provide the user with detailed answers to his questions.
As part of the demo, Microsoft showed an updated Bing that displays familiar search results next to annotations, as well as a chat interface designed to interact with the AI algorithm. The developers showed several examples on visual search queries, including recipes, travel tips, furniture selection, and more. on the sources of information that were used to form it.
“It’s a new day to search. The race starts today and we’re going to move and move fast. Most importantly, we want to enjoy search innovation again, because its time is long overdue,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during the presentation.
The company announced that the new version of Bing will be available on the day of the launch to a limited number of users, but availability will expand in the near future. At the same time, they will be able to make only a limited number of queries in the new search engine, and will also be able to register for full access to the new Bing features in the future.
In addition to the new Bing interface, developers have introduced two AI features of the Edge browser. We are talking about the tools “Chat” and “Composition”, which will appear in the sidebar of the Internet browser.
The “Chat” function will allow you to summarize the web page or document you are viewing, ask questions about the content of the text. The Composing feature works as an assistant for writing messages, such as emails or social media posts, and also allows you to create texts based on a few initial requests.
