Both download and upload speeds are highest in Brussels, according to nPerf. Telenet is the fastest telecom provider in Brussels and Flanders. In Wallonia, Voo is the winner.
nPerf carried out tests in Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia last year to determine the data speed of fixed internet connections. In the results, it distinguishes between providers, and the differences between regions. In addition to the upload and download speeds, nPerf also measured the latency (delay) on the line for the tests. Brussels emerged as the winner in each of those tests.
Highest data rates in Brussels
Both the upload and download speeds and the latency are respectively the highest and lowest in that region. Residents of Brussels can count on average download speeds of 181 Mb/s and upload speeds of 28 Mb/s. A lot higher than the speeds seen by nPerf in Flanders, at 160 Mb/s down and 27 Mb/s upload speed. Wallonia dangles at the bottom of the ranking and, with a download speed of 160 Mb/s, scores the same as Flanders, but plummets in the ranking with an upload speed of 17 Mb/s.
This is not an error in the calculation. nPerf carried out 47,118 tests in Wallonia to ensure the results. Far more tests than the organization performed in Flanders (8,417) and Brussels (6,847). For these tests, nPerf always relied on the fixed Internet connections of the nPerf community, which can measure their data speeds via its website.
If we also look at the latency of the regions, Brussels and Wallonia come out on top this time, with an average latency of 19 ms. In Flanders this is slightly higher, at 20 ms. Although you can speak of minor differences, the delay in each region is on the relatively high side.
Telenet as the fastest provider
If you want the best internet connection, it’s best to join Telenet in Brussels and Flanders. With the telecom operator you get average download speeds of 206.91 Mb/s in Flanders. Orange and Proximus – Telenet’s main competitors in Flanders – lag behind with speeds of 125.98 Mb/s and 93.92 Mb/s respectively. Proximus is at the forefront in Flanders when it comes to upload speeds, with average speeds of 36.17 Mb/s.
Telenet is also the fastest in Brussels, with download speeds of 224.86 Mb/s, versus just over 200 Mb/s at Voo. Proximus takes the lead again when it comes to upload speed and manages to break the 50 Mb/s mark. The speed is even more than twice as high as that of Telenet – which has upload speeds of up to 23.25 Mb/s in Brussels.
Voo is network king in Wallonia
Finally, there is Wallonia, which is in the hands of Voo. Customers of this provider achieve an average download speed of 177.5 Mb/s in Wallonia. It won’t surprise you, but Proximus is also returning as king of uploads in this region. However, the speeds are somewhat lower than in Brussels, at 29.75 Mb/s. You can therefore say that you should choose Proximus if you prefer upload speed over the speed during download.
Telenet customers will soon be able to enjoy the same speeds. Here’s the thing: Voo was taken over by Orange at the end of 2021, which recently signed a deal with Telenet to open up the Voo network to Telenet customers. Anyone who takes out a subscription with Telenet for a fixed connection in Wallonia will actually be using the Voo network.
