Nintendo has announced an offer to play Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games. Here’s how to enjoy it and for what prices.
Big announcement this Wednesday February 8 during the Nintendo direct on the games of the first half of 2023. If we saw many trailers, including that of the next The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, nostalgia was also in the spotlight with HD remakes of all kinds.
And as the nostalgia seems to be paying off, Nintendo is continuing its process of recycling its old consoles by adding the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance to Nintendo Switch Online. Here is the full list of games for each platform at launch.
Games on Game Boy at launch:
Tetris ;
The Legend of Zelda : Link’s Awakening DX ;
Super Mario Land 2 ;
Kirby’s Dream Land ;
Metroid 2 ;
Wario Land 3 ;
Game & Watch Gallery 3 ;
Gargoyle’s Quest ;
Alone in the Dark : The New Nightmare.
Note that other upcoming games were shown during the conference such as The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, or even Pokemon Trading Card Game and Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble.
Games on Game Boy Advance at launch:
Super Mario Advance 4 ; WarioWare, Inc. ; Kuru Kuru Kururin ; Mario Kart : Super Circuit ; Mario & Luigi : Superstar Saga ; The Legend of Zelda : The Minish Cap.
How to take advantage of it?
Hang in there, because as so often with Nintendo and online features, nothing is simple. We advise you to read all of the following three paragraphs to make the right choice.
To use Nintendo retro console games, you must be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber. Individually, it costs 20 euros for one year. But if you have friends or relatives who would like to subscribe too, you can subscribe to a family subscription and invite them to join you to share the bill (up to 8 people). For one year, this costs 35 euros.
However, with the Online subscription, you will only be able to play GameBoy, NES and Super NES as retro consoles. For the N64, the Mega Drive and now the Game Boy Advance, you must subscribe to an additional pack in addition to the online subscription, whether it is a family or individual subscription. This pack also gives access to additional races in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and DLCs for Animal Crossing and Splatoon 2.
There, the addition goes up immediately since it is impossible not to subscribe for one year for this additional pack. For an individual subscription with an additional pack, you go from 20 to 40 euros. For a family subscription, the pack raises the price from 35 to 70 euros. The price of nostalgia no doubt.
