02/09/2023 at 11:41 a.m. by Andreas Link – It didn’t take long before the measures against account sharing at Netflix were back. In Europe, Spain and Portugal are affected, where an additional fee of 5.99 euros exempts from the penalties of the shared account.
Postponed is not lifted: At Netflix, the measures against account sharing are back and the additional fee is now there. In Europe, Portugal and Spain are the first to be affected; Overseas it is Canada and New Zealand. If you share your account across households in Spain and Portugal, you have to pay an additional fee of 5.99 euros. That’s significantly more than in the Latin American test markets, where the surcharge is the equivalent of 2 to 3 euros.
Account sharing rules have been a hot topic these days, and Netflix’s methods of determining whether or not an account is shared are based on that. Users must therefore regularly identify themselves with the home network. As an exception, there are time-limited tokens that can be requested from support.
Netflix’ best show of the moment: news about account sharing
When other countries will follow is probably only a matter of time. Whether the additional fee will be introduced everywhere remains uncertain. Netflix ultimately legitimizes the sharing of the account. At the top, 17.99 euros are then due for the UHD subscription, which works on four devices at the same time. In addition, there would be 5.99 euros for sharing. Makes 23.98 euros or 5.99 euros per user with four friends in a shared account. This is still cheaper than the smallest subscription for 7.99 euros (without advertising), but which only offers HD; for 10.99 euros there is HD. However, Netflix recently removed 3D audio from the list here as well.
Netflix had announced to investors that it would expand measures against account sharing in the first quarter. After the limbo with the FAQ, which was probably activated too early, Spain and Portugal as well as Canada and New Zealand should now be regular starts. The general conditions are explained in detail again here.
