The most atypical smartphone of recent years is about to make a comeback. After the media success of the Nothing Phone (1), information on the Nothing Phone (2) leaked, the latter taking a completely different direction.
Released barely six months ago, the Nothing Phone (1) is one of those smartphones which, among the dozens that we see passing each year, really stands out. Nothing is a very young brand (just two years old), and in addition to wireless headphones, their first and only phone has used the hype around its unique design to create a buzz.
A success not so surprising when you see the list of the main investors of the company: Carl Pei, co-founder of Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus. Investors in the company include iPod inventor Tony Fadell, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, and YouTuber Casey Neistat.
But while the Nothing Phone (1) still has many good months ahead of it before blowing out its first candle, the first rumors about his successor are already pointing the tip of their nose. They come from an Indian site called Mysmartprice. Little known in the industry, the site still has a 100% success rate for the information they have revealed about Apple products. And if they are also strong with Nothing, then the following info is true.
Carl Pei has already formalized the release of the Nothing Phone (2) for 2023, at least on the US market. And according to Mysmartprice, it will be very different from the first edition.
A much more premium smartphone
While the Phone (1) competed against the best mid-range smartphones on the market like Samsung’s Galaxy A53, the Phone (2) would be a top-of-the-line proposition, starting with the processor which would be one of the models of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Series 8 series. We don’t know what the exact version will be, but it promises proportionally higher performance.
Same for RAM and storage. Unlike an iPhone, an Android smartphone needs a lot of RAM to really perform. Say goodbye to the base 8GB and 128GB of storage, that would be 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of minimum storage.
Better battery, better screen for the Nothing Phone (2)
The rumors do not stop there, and also mention the battery capacity, which should go from 4500 mAh on the Phone (1) to 5000 mAh on the Phone (2). If Nothing gets it right on their chip optimization, that should translate to slightly improved battery life.
More what should really improve battery life is the new screen technology. The first edition of the Nothing Phone already has an OLED screen with a display frequency of 120 Hz for smooth scrolling and gaming. But its big flaw is that it is not de type LTPO, meaning that its refresh cannot adapt according to what is happening on the screen, to refresh only once per second when there is no movement on the screen, and back up to 120 times per second when necessary. This logically saves battery, and the Nothing Phone (2) would be entitled to it.
A release date?
No specific release date, but Mysmartprice thinks the Nothing Phone (2) will be released in the third quarter of 2023 worldwide, not only in the US as the CEO of the company says.
