The upcoming baseball simulation “MLB The Show 23” will bring the Negro Leagues into play for the first time and work through the time of racial segregation in the “Storylines”.
Earlier this week, Sony Interactive Entertainment and San Diego Studio made a big announcement for the baseball simulation “MLB The Show 23”, which is of great importance, especially in the historical context. For the first time in video game history, the Negro Leagues will be playable as part of Storylines.
A historical account
The Negro Leagues originate from the time of racial segregation and were accordingly professional leagues in which only black or African-American players, coaches and referees could be seen. At the time, MLB was again made up entirely of white players. Nonetheless, the Negro Leagues have seen some of the greatest players in baseball history finally get the recognition they deserve through the video game.
The best-known player is certainly Jackie Robinson, who was the first black player in MLB in 1947. Previously, he had already proven his class in the Negro Leagues. But eyewitnesses had said for years that Robinson was nowhere near the best player in the Negro Leagues. Long forgotten names like Buck O’Neil, Hank Thompson and Satchel Paige emerged.
During a live stream, developers spoke to Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, about the league’s integration into MLB The Show 23. Eventually, the developers had to rework the stadiums, spectators, referees and more to ensure accurate representation.
