Change of leadership: For the first time, SNK takes the helm in the duel of the 2D beating giants. Of course, the long-established warhorses don’t let themselves be shabby on this occasion – 24 fighters (twelve from each camp) plus some bonus characters that can be selected via the right shoulder button are waiting for classic brawls. Fighting takes place in one-on-one duels, and SNK’s typical four-button combat system is used for beating up. Almost all the moves you love are on board, you can get super specials from the combo bar, which can be charged a maximum of three times – these are easier to handle than seldom before. The newly drawn characters boast delicious animations – the dreary backgrounds, on the other hand, seem carelessly sloppy.
Main points of criticism are the imbalance of the hidden fighters (bloodsuckers Demitri and MegaMan-Buddy Zero are clearly too strong) as well as occasional errors in collision detection. As is typical of 2D Beat’em Up, you enjoy advantages with the PS2 pad, but Xbox bats go online if you wish.
Simply good: Fine animations and excellent controls provide comfort over dreary backgrounds.
