There is an acute shortage of special chips.
The authorities of the Russian Federation, together with participants in the microelectronics market, began to look for new ways of development for domestic design centers, which, in the era of sanctions, are not able to purchase modern chips from foreign factories. One of the directions can be the development of electronics for auto components.
Representatives of Russian factories confirm that the shortage of parts, caused (including) by the global shortage of special chips, remains. Market participants specify that at the moment the problem is partially solved at the expense of Chinese partners of domestic automakers and suppliers from friendly countries.
Kommersant sources who are directly related to design centers and the government, as well as representatives of relevant ministries and heads of Russian microelectronics developers are currently discussing a strategy for the development and production of auto components in the Russian Federation. We are talking about sensors, controllers, control modules, sensor systems and other “smart” details.
Kommersant claims, referring to another source, that analysts from B1 (the former Russian branch of Ernst & Young) are also involved in the development and production strategy for auto components in the Russian Federation. Another interlocutor of the publication confirmed that the design and production of components in Russia is “one of possible models in the context of sanctions and the global shortage of auto electronics. Certification of such components “takes time, so the plans are long-term.”
According to the insider, design centers should soon complete the preparation of relevant plans in accordance with the needs of car factories. In Mikron, for example, they confirmed that auto electronics is a “promising direction”. In addition, the plant boasts IATF 16949 certification (the standard for quality management systems for suppliers in the automotive industry), as well as “already mastered components for body electronics and engine management systems, driver assistance systems, lighting fixtures.”
For the production of auto components, existing production lines with 90 nm standards already mastered by Russian factories will fit, said Dmitry Kornachev, director of the association “Consortium of enterprises in the field of automotive electronic devices and telematics”.
AvtoVAZ notes that “in Russia, the problem is aggravated by sanctions pressure, as well as the decision of some suppliers, for example, Bosch, to leave the Russian market.” So, for example, in 2022 the concern localized more than 200 components, some of which are electronic, “also, some of the components were replaced by analogues from friendly countries.”

We must not forget that the Russian automotive industry and the automotive market are in a deep crisis, so its needs may simply not be enough to develop the production of components. Sales of passenger cars in the Russian Federation in 2022 fell by 58.8% to 687.4 thousand cars. The production of passenger cars in the country fell even more. According to official data from the Federal State Statistics Service, the production of cars decreased by 67%, to a historic low of 450,000 cars.
