On the occasion of the Game Awards 2022, the sequel Death Stranding 2 was officially confirmed in December. For a long time, however, there was some ambiguity surrounding the script; this might even have had to be rewritten on a larger scale.
Shortly after Death Stranding 2 was announced at The Game Awards 2022, mastermind Hideo Kojima confirmed that the script for the sequel had to be rewritten due to the corona pandemic. However, there were still more ambiguities around the story and possibly further changes needed, because depending on the approval or rejection of an involved start, Kojima would have had to sit down again at the desk.
In his podcast Brain Structure, Kojima was last heard together with video game journalist Geoff Keighley and actress Elle Fanning – and the latter certainly has an important role when it comes to Death Stranding 2.
Kojima confirmed that he had wanted to work with Elle Fanning for a long time – even before Kojima Productions became an independent studio. He has always been a fan of her work as an actress, Kojima said.
In Death Stranding 2, he finally wants to make that long-cherished dream come true, so he scripted a character specifically with Elle Fanning as the actress in mind. This character is said to take on the talents of the performer to “create a character like none before”.
Kojima didn’t want to reveal what role Fanning actually plays in the sequel, but he goes on to explain that it was created from scratch with a new character. And further: “Even though I’ve designed the full character and finished the script, I’ll take observations I make about Elle and incorporate those characteristics.”
Ultimately, this very special alignment of the game character with Fanning could have become a real problem, as Kojima further admits: “She is a very, very important character and yes: I created the character with Elle in mind. I’m really worried done if she said no. I would have had to throw out scenes that I wrote because she’s just such an important part.”
In addition to rewriting the script because of the pandemic, other major revisions could have been planned if Fanning Kojima had canceled – but fortunately she didn’t do that.
The character of the actress in Death Stranding 2 remains a relatively big mystery for the moment, because many details other than her portrayal of the role have not yet been revealed. Death Stranding 2 also has no specific release date, although previous rumors pointed to a planned release in 2024. We will keep you up to date!
