There has never been so much talk about artificial intelligence and ChatGPT as now. In fact, the popularity of intelligent systems that we can talk to is at an all-time high. Needless to say, when there is so much buzz around an issue, service takers soon emerge. Thus, ChatGPT apps for Windows and Android are appearing all over the Internet. The problem is that they are fake in most cases and can even put users in danger!
Watch out for ChatGPT apps for Windows and Android!
It is undeniable that ChatGPT has gained immense traction since its launch in November 2022, becoming the fastest growing app in modern history, with over 100 million users by January 2023. Incidentally, it was this popularity that led to OpenAI to speed up development and even launch a paid version for those who don’t want to have any restrictions on availability.
This created conditions for criminals to exploit the tool’s popularity by promising uninterrupted and free access to premium ChatGPT. The offers are many and the aim is to lure users into installing malware or collecting personal data.
the security investigator Dominic Alvieri was one of the first to notice one of these examples. So they created the address “chat-gpt-pc.online” to infect visitors and steal information. The trick was to download a ChatGPT client for Windows with no limitations as mentioned by the Bleeping Computer website.
This site was promoted by a Facebook page that even used official ChatGPT logos to trick users into being redirected to the malicious site.
However, this researcher also saw fake ChatGPT apps being promoted on the Google Play Store and third-party Android app stores.
In this regard, researchers from the security company Cyble have published a relevant report where they present additional findings about the malware distribution campaign discovered by Alvieri, as well as other malicious operations that exploit the popularity of ChatGPT.
There are several active dangerous domains, pages to steal credit card data and more than 50 fake apps. In other words, a real danger.
These threats hide various dangers. Some will make us spend a lot of money on SMS and others manage to steal the call log, contact lists, SMS and files from the device.
