In popular search engines, functions based on neural networks are increasingly appearing. The developers of the Brave search engine decided to keep up with this trend and introduced the Summarizer tool, which was based on several large language models (the ChatGPT tool from Open AI was not used). From the name of the function, you can guess that its purpose is to generalize search queries, for which the algorithm processes data from different sources.

According to reports, the Summarizer feature has become available to all users of the Brave search engine on computers and mobile devices. In the examples provided by the developers, this tool aggregates information on queries such as “are acetaminophen and ibuprofen the same” using data from medical resources, or “what happened in East Palestine, Ohio” based on data from news sites.
“With 22 million queries daily, Brave is the fastest growing search engine since Bing. Unlike an AI chatbot that can provide inaccurate answers, the Summarizer creates a simple summary at the top of search results by aggregating data from different online sources and providing source attribution for transparency and accountability. This open system is available to all Brave search engine users today to help them navigate search results,” a Brave spokesperson said.

It is noted that at this stage, the AI function of the Brave search engine does not generate a generalization for any queries. Currently, this approach is used only for 17% of search queries, but the company plans to increase this figure over time. At the heart of the Summarizer function is Brave’s own language model, which combines three algorithms. The first model of questions and answers allows you to collect textual data from different sources. The second model screens out spam and hate speech. The third model processes the collected information and generates a brief summary, which is what the user of the search engine sees.
