On the LinkedIn page of the game’s lead writer, Alison Rymer, Forspoken is described as “a fantasy AAA video game (budget $100,000,000+) with a release date set for Fall 2022” (time before second postponement).
The revelation of Rymer’s comments comes just days after Square Enix said the game’s sales were “inconclusive” and its financial failures posed a “significant risk” to the parent company. The game’s poor performance is believed to have led to its developer, Luminous Productions, being taken over by Square Enix, and may have contributed to the departure of the publisher’s president.
The figure of $ 100 million caused a real shock among users on Twitterone user suggested that “they must have accidentally added 0. It can’t be that this game had a budget of 100 million”.
A lot of users are trying to figure out where all this money could have gone, not least because Forspoken’s reviews don’t speak volumes about the quality of a game of this caliber. While we don’t often look behind the financial curtain of AAA titles, it’s hoped that the nine-figure price tag will translate into a Metacritic score of over 64, which is where Forspoken currently sits.
