Tetsuya Mizuguchi is considered one of the big stars of the Japanese gaming industry and has already brought us numerous, extremely unusual gaming hits, including “Space Channel 5”, “Rez”, “Lumines”, “Meteos”, “Child of Eden” and ” Tetris effect”. In this 2-part feature, we outline his story – from his exciting time in Sega’s arcade division to founding Q Entertainment to his stint at Keio Media Design University.
Tetsuya Mizuguchi was born on May 22, 1965 in the northern Japanese coastal city of Otaru. Little is known about his childhood. What is certain, however, is that he was already very enthusiastic about music videos as a teenager and that MTV quickly became his absolute favorite station. This love for music videos eventually went so far that, while studying at the art faculty of Nihon University in Tokyo, Mizuguchi regularly retired to his room with a professional Sony Betacam recorder to edit his own clips there. Many of these later serve as music videos for some friends’ band.
