With Destiny 2: Lightfall, the developers of the MMO shooter have brought a new system into play, which is intended to show newcomers who the wise veterans they can stick to are. On the other hand, the system serves as a carrot in the players’ noses when they don’t know what to do next. These are the guardian ranks, of which there are a total of eleven to reach. Small mini-tasks, which become more complex and difficult with each rank, and completing them allow you to rise through the rank system and thus partly unlock other features of the game, such as additional memory slots for the loadout manager.
The introduction of Guardian Ranks makes sense to guide players through the Destiny universe. Most of you will start at rank 6 anyway if you’ve put a lot of time into the shooter in the past. However, according to the TWAB of March 16, 2023, some tasks are at the wrong rank or are unnecessarily demanding. For this reason, an adjustment has already been made, particularly in the assessment tasks.

Guardian Rank Appreciation reduced
As early as March 14, 2023, the amount of Appreciation you need for Rank 7 through Rank 11 was reduced. Appreciations are also new to Lightfall and allow you to give appreciations to specific players at the end of a multiplayer match in playlist activities if they have excelled in their actions. One of the Guardian’s tasks, for example, to advance from Guardian Rank 6 to Guardian Rank 7, is to collect enough appreciations. And the required quantities are as follows since March 14, 2023:
Rank 7: 460 (from 750)Rank 8: 790 (from 1250)Rank 9: 1290 (from 1750)Rank 10: 1530 (from 5000)Rank 11: 1800 (from 6000)
There will be more adjustments in the future. For example, for Guardian Rank 7 (Elite) you should complete a Lost Sector Flawless (i.e. without dying), Solo (i.e. alone) and Legendary – given how difficult various activities in Destiny 2 (buy now €12.90) are. since Lightfall has been scaling, it’s been a blatant challenge. These Lost Sector tasks are scheduled to be moved in the future so Bungie says fewer players are “stuck” at rank 6.
Do Guardian rank nerfs make sense?
In the run-up to Destiny 2: Lightfall, it was not clear what goals the developers were pursuing with the guardian ranks. Now it seems clear: The players of the MMO shooter should in any case have the opportunity to reach the final rank – so this is not only reserved for the most hardcore players, although it can be assumed that only a fraction of the players will complete the tasks can. The coupling of appreciations to the advancement through the ranking system still seems funny, because theoretically they can be farmed very easily with friends and do not make any statement about how social or not social a player is. After all, the amounts of the necessary appreciations have been reduced, which is a sensible decision.
