Over the years, Mortal Kombat has changed its storytelling formula. The first few games in the iconic series relied solely on extra reading material, as well as text before and after ladder matches. The latest trilogy takes a more linear and fluid approach, inserting cutscenes between fights to advance the story. However, it was in the era of Deception and Armageddon with the Conquest mode that the creators really went haywire, and Ed Boon hints at his return in the next part.
NetherRealm tried the open world formula with these two games, introducing a vastly underrated mode called Conquest. Think Krypta from Mortal Kombat 11, but with a real storyline and side quests. With the latest MK trilogy coming to a sort of climax and Mortal Kombat 12 almost officially announced, fans are wondering what direction future games will take.
Ed Boon, being Ed Boon, loves to play with the feelings of the fans. Back in November of last year, when we didn’t know about MK 12 yet, Boone said that NetherRealm was “more likely to do a new Conquest” than a Deception remaster during a Q&A session. More recently, however, Boone asked fans on Twitter which game mode from the Deception-Armageddon era they would like to see again – Chess Kombat, Konquest, Motor Kombat, or Puzzle Kombat.
As expected, Conquest leads with 44.5% of the vote. Motor Kombat, a brutal MK kart, comes in second with 31%, followed by Chess Kombat, which is chess with combat where you take your opponent’s piece. Puzzle Kombat, which was essentially a competitive Tetris, comes in last place.
