Synopsis
The Quartet for the End of Time, by Olivier Messiaen, is one of the most iconic works of the 20th century. XX. Considered a declaration of worldliness and faith, it was composed at the end of 1940, during the 2nd World War, when Messiaen was imprisoned in the Nazi camp Stalag VIII-A, in Görlitz. Messiaen was repatriated in May 1941 and the Quartet’s public debut took place in Paris in June, with the composer at the piano. The absolute premiere had already taken place at Stalag VIII-A, in January, also with the composer at the piano and accompanied by 3 prisoner musicians, before an audience made up of German soldiers and prisoners. The composer later stated that never before had his music been listened to with such consideration and understanding.
In this concert, the interpretation will be in charge of the DSCH – Schostakovich Ensemble, a top European ensemble, with emphasis on the presence of the violinist Esther Hoppe and the cellist Christian Poltéra, both with legendary Stradivarius instruments, the pianist Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro and the great clarinetist Frenchman Pascal Moraguès, who played the Quartet for the composer himself.
