Stiftung Warentest
Stiftung Warentest tested grilled sausages for the 08/2022 issue. The experts examined 14 popular pork sausages and seven vegan or vegetarian products. The result: a total of 12 of the 14 classic sausages scored “good”. No brand can secure the top rating “very good”. One product was particularly disappointing in comparison and received the grade “sufficient”.

The Vegane Mühlen Bratwurst from Rügenwalder Mühle was the test winner among the vegetarian and vegan sausages. Overall, the vegetarian/vegan variants mostly scored well with the testers: four out of seven are “good”, three are “satisfactory”.
Note: According to the supplier, the product has now been renamed “vegane Mühlen Rostbratwurst” – a different product is now being sold as “vegane Mühlen Bratwurst”.
ECO TEST
ÖKO-TEST also recently (July 2022) subjected grilled sausages to a test. Unlike the testers from Stiftung Warentest, only boiled pork sausages were scrutinized here. Among the test products were sausages from high-priced organic markets, but also inexpensive own brands from discounters and supermarkets.
The test shows that when it comes to sausages, organic products are way ahead. The two winners include the Alnatura Rostbrat sausages (Bioland) and the Edeka Bio Original Thuringian Rostbratwurst.
The conventional sausages are only partially convincing, but there are also some disappointments. The product of a large discounter does not pass the test with the rating “poor”. The reason: The testers found increased mineral oil components and phosphates in the grilled sausage. In addition, the salt content is increased.
Consumer
The Austrian consumer magazine Verbraucher did not test classic grilled sausages, but Käsekrainer – the most popular grilled sausage in Austria, which is also very popular in Germany. 28 packaged Käsekrainer, including 6 turkey Käsekrainer, were put through their paces in the test laboratory. The result: More than three quarters of the tested products performed perfectly.
