The lead author of this study, Dr. Benjamin Sanchez Terrones, reveals that he is a huge attention-getter. That said, wearables like smartwatches interfered with the operation of every device they tested.
But there are also other devices that can interfere with these equipments.. An example of this are even some smart scales that use the bioimpedance technique. In practice, it emits a small, imperceptible current throughout the body that interferes with the cardiac apparatus.
In practice, the danger is that the devices are all out of order and it becomes dangerous. For example, the pacemaker that sends small electrical impulses to the heart when it is beating slower can be tricked into “thinking” that the heart is beating at the right speed.
When dealing with cardioverter-defibrillators, the danger is even greater.
Not only do they work as pacemarkers, they also have the ability to deliver small shocks to the heart.
I remember that there are several smartwatches with an electrical bioimpedance sensor. Thus, due to the interference they cause, the defibrillator may give an unnecessary shock to the heart.
However, almost all, if not all, implantable cardiac devices come with a warning about potential interference with a variety of electronic devices due to magnetic fields.
But according to the author of the study, this is the first time that problems related to the bioimpedance technology of a gadget have been discovered.
