Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced in February 2019, four years ago. It was originally planned as a DLC expansion for Hollow Knight, allowing players to play the game as the Hornet character. Team Cherry eventually decided to expand the DLC into a full-fledged project, and have largely remained silent as development has continued since then. In June 2022, Xbox announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong would be released within the next 12 months, but as June 2023 approaches, the game’s release becomes less and less likely.
Vigilant Hollow Knight fans have noticed that the official Hollow Knight: Silksong website is down. At the time, fans were hoping this meant that Team Cherry would be updating the site with new information. However, this turned out not to be true, as those who searched for information about the site’s domain found that the registry had simply expired.
Team Cherry later confirmed that there was a “problem” with the old Hollow Knight: Silksong domain. At this point, the site will be connected to the silksong.com URL. Whether Team Cherry will be able to get back their old URL for Hollow Knight: Silksong is not yet clear, but it is possible that this is just a technical error that can also be resolved relatively quickly.
Hollow Knight fans joke that even Team Cherry forgot about the development of Silksong, but the truth is most likely that everyone decided that the site’s domain would just automatically update, or that someone else was in charge of the site. With everyone so focused on completing Hollow Knight: Silksong, it’s understandable that something could slip through the cracks.
Team Cherry is self-publishing Hollow Knight: Silksong, after all. While the publisher usually takes care of the marketing, such as building the website, Team Cherry has to do it themselves. However, losing the URL of a site that has been in use for years is still a noticeable loss. It’s a site that fans have bookmarked and that Google knows.
