Keanu Reeves, who we will soon see in John Wick 4, in an interview granted to Wired has revealed the existence of a particular clause that prohibits the excessive use of digital alteration in post production on his acting performances.
The use of post-production to modify the aesthetic features of one’s character has often been used in the latest cinematic releases. In some cases, CGI has served to rejuvenate some actors like Robert De Niro in The Irishman for example. In other cases it was necessary to remove some aesthetic traits, such as Henry Cavill’s mustache in Justice League. Sometimes, however, computer graphics have been used for recreate the features of actors who have disappeared before being able to return to the set. These are the cases of Carrie Fisher, Brandon Lee or Paul Walker.
However, this technology does not meet the favor of the American actor. Keanu Reeves considers it dangerous and capable of undermining the very autonomy of the actors. The clause on his contract therefore attempts to circumvent this problem, avoiding the excessive use of CGI on his body.
“I don’t mind if someone decides to remove an eyelash during an edit,” says Keanu Reeves. “But in the early 2000s, or maybe the late 90s, I saw my performance change. They added a tear to my face, and I was amazed: “Huh? It’s like you don’t even have to be in this scene!”
“What’s frustrating about using CGI is that you lose control of your performance. When you’re acting in a movie, you know this performance is going to be edited, but you’re part of it. If instead you enter the land of Deep Fake, there will be nothing of you. This is scary, added the actor. The fear of losing one’s ‘identity’ due to the Deep Fake is concrete, and the scenario terrifies him.
“It will be interesting to see how humans react to these technologies. They are having such a major impact on culture and sociology, and are still being studied. There is so much information about behaviors now. Technologies are finding a place in our education, medicine, entertainment, politics, warfare and work.”
“I was trying to explain the story of The Matrix to this 15-year-old kid, and I was discussing the fact that Neo was fighting for what was really important. His reaction was like, “Who cares if it’s real?” People are growing up with these instruments: we listen to music made by an Artificial Intelligence that replicates the style of Nirvana, there is NFT digital art. But there is a corporatocracy that tries to control all of these things,” concluded Keanu Reeves.
John Wick 4 will be released in theaters on March 24, 2023. Recently, one of the actors sadly passed away. We are talking about Lance Reddick, interpreter of the Concierge in the Continental, the historic hotel where John’s events revolve. We remember that a TV series is also in development on the Continentalas well as another spin-off series called Ballerina and which will see the participation of Norman Reedus.
