Shazam: Wrath of the Gods didn’t fare well in its opening week, grossing 44% less than the first installment. It grossed only $30 million in its first three days in theaters. On the day of the debut, fees amounted to only $11.7 million, compared with $20.3 million for the first part. Considering the film’s budget was $125 million, it will be some time before it breaks even.
Director David F. Sandberg, who previously linked the making of the third film to the success of the second, also spoke about the progress of the film. Sandberg answered some questions from fans about the film’s box office performance.
One user started by writing that Sandberg deserved more, while another tagged him directly to get a heated comment. A third user then responded, “It’s not fair to tag him in a post about his film’s disappointing results. I realize that’s a positive comment, but still not very appropriate.” To which Sandberg, registered on Reddit as a dauid, replied: “Don’t worry. I knew for a long time how it would end and I was right. They paid me the full amount up front.”
Either way, unless there’s a revival in the coming weeks, it’s unlikely we’ll see a third movie if the numbers stay the same.
