It was 2016 when Task Force X reached our cinemas for the first time. DC’s film managed to demonstrate that, if well motivated, even the worst super-villains can do some good. Suicide Squad is but the son of a rather troubled gestation. The film was the victim of heavy alterations by Warner Bros who decided to give the film in post-production david yesterday a more humorous edge. But that’s not all, because the plot also changed substantially. Just about the plot, in the last few hours the director has returned to talk about his initial editing, revealing an important detail that would have linked the film to another important project of the old DC Cinematic Universe.
As explained by Ayer on Twitter, the original Suicide Squad script had a major connection to Joss Whedon’s Justice League. The initial idea was to make the enchantress succumb to one of the Mother Boxes seen in Justice League. The villain would eventually open a portal to Apokolips, starting a major battle. In fact, it is precisely at this moment that Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons would have entered the scene, laying the foundations for the next ensemble film.
“The problem with the script is that Steppenwolf and the Parademon army were removed before the production stage. The Enchantress was under the control of a Mother Box and opened a portal to Apokolips. All this part of the plot disappeared in the early stages of production. It was a great loss.”
The choice to introduce the main villain of Justice League already in Suicide Squad would have helped to make these films more united with each other. The removal of Steppenwolf and the subsequent reworkings of the film are only the reconfirmation that the previous management of Warner did not have very clear ideas on how to manage this great project. Hopefully, with James Gunn taking over, the DC Universe will find the right way to tell stories.
Speaking of Suicide Squad, apparently the title produced by Rocksteady could undergo a new postponement. As explained by Jason Schreier, the reason for this new postponement would be due to the recent criticisms of the fans that emerged after the last gameplay shown during the PlayStatioin event in February.
The script issue was having Steppenwolfe and the Parademons stripped out prior to production. Enchantress was under the control of a mother box and opening a Portal to Apokalypse. This was all cut early in prep. That was a hard loss. https://t.co/0szGMlyjWf
