Hellboy creator and screenwriter Mike Mignola spoke to Variety about the new Hero from Hell reboot, subtitled The Crooked Man.
“Our director Brian Taylor intends to make a horror film. I finished reading the new draft of the script yesterday and we’re definitely going to have an adult R rating. This is the first time I’ve read Hellboy and said, “Exactly what I wanted.” Taylor has no reputation as a master of horror. But we’ve had two horror directors who have done Hellboy before. And there was no horror movie.
We’ve been saying over the years that the Hellboy movie needs to be scaled down. And The Crooked Man is perfect for that. This is one of the best and strongest stories I have ever written. It is beautifully illustrated by Richard Corben. It has few characters. From a budget standpoint, it’s good too, because it’s more of a local adventure. Not the origin of the hero and not the plot of how he saves the world. It’s a dark, folksy horror story.”
“At the center of the plot of the new film will be the adventures of Hellboy and the newly minted BRPD agent. Trapped in the Appalachian countryside, they discover a small community inhabited by witches led by the Crooked Man, a local devil with a disturbing connection to Hellboy’s past.”
