At the end of February, Microsoft released a massive update to Windows 11, called Moment 2. The platform received a lot of new features, but this week another small update came out, which brought some noticeable problems to some users. They suddenly slowed down the speed of solid state drives. As a temporary solution, Microsoft suggested that they copy the files through the command line.

We are talking about the update package for Windows 11 22H2 under the number KB5023706. The Release Notes page under “Known Issues Related to This Update” states that there may be a speed decrease when copying large files that are several gigabytes in size. Most often, the problem manifests itself when copying data from network shares using the SMB protocol, but there are precedents with slow performance in the local environment.
For most users working at home or in a small office, according to Microsoft, the problem, due to its network nature, should go unnoticed. Unfortunately, in practice this is not always the case: one of the users of the Reddit forum claims that on his laptop of the Lenovo Legion series, the data reading speed dropped from 7 to 1 GB / s – when the update was removed, the problem disappeared, so there is no doubt about the reasons for the failure . Other users of the resource reported similar problems. In one case, the game loading time increased from 14 seconds to 31 seconds.
You can check the speed of the SSD, for example, using the CrystalDiskMark program. If the indicators have not fallen, you can not worry. If the slowdown is present, Microsoft has a temporary workaround – to copy network files through the command line interface without I / O buffering using the robocopy or xcopy utilities. The solution, of course, is far from ideal, but Microsoft is already working on fixing the problem.
