Microsoft subsidiary Nuance Communications, which produces speech recognition tools, announced the launch of a new Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Express application. It will work on the basis of artificial intelligence and take clinical notes instead of medical workers.

DAX Express will take over most of the administrative work of doctors, automatically creating drafts of the patient’s medical file. The technology essentially records the conversation, which is then structured using the recently introduced OpenAI GPT-4 language model.

“Our ultimate goal is to reduce the cognitive load and the amount of time clinicians actually have to spend on these administrative tasks,” said Diana Nole, executive vice president of Nuance Healthcare.

Microsoft acquired Nuance for $19 billion in 2021. The company makes money by selling speech recognition and transcription tools that are used for doctor visits, help desk calls, and voice mail. At one time, Nuance developed the technology that Apple later bought for its virtual assistant Siri.

Nole says the new technology will be enabled through Nuance’s Dragon Medical One speech recognition program, which is used by more than 550,000 doctors. Dragon Medical One is a voice-controlled cloud-based assistant that allows physicians to navigate clinical systems and quickly access patient information. Clinical notes created by DAX Express will appear on the Dragon Medical One desktop.

DAX Express is also based on the original DAX application that Nuance launched in 2020. He turned patients’ verbal responses into clinical notes and sent them for review to a person who had to make sure they were accurate and of good quality. The notes appeared in the medical record within four hours of the client’s visit. Updated AI software OpenAI creates clinical notes in seconds.

There are no specifics on the cost of the program yet – it is known that it will depend on the number of clients and the size of a particular medical institution. Already in the summer, DAX Express will be available as a private demo.

Alice Taylor, corporate vice president of the Azure group at Microsoft, says DAX Express is committed to Microsoft’s principles of responsible artificial intelligence. Nuance has strict data agreements with customers and data is fully encrypted and runs in a HIPAA compliant environment.

Nole added that physicians can edit notes created by DAX Express and sign them before they are entered into the patient’s electronic medical record.

True, the details of when the new feature will appear were not disclosed at the conference, they only noted that “a lot will have to be done before the system is ready for the real world.”
