Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes could have been the start of a series of episodic releases according to initial plans by Hidejo Kojima.
Hidejo Kojima looked back on Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes nine years after the release date and reported on his ideas at the time.
He originally planned Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes as a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Additionally, it could have been the first part of a series of episodes.
Kojima wrote down Twitter: “In fact, it was my big intention to start GZ. A full game takes 4-5 years to develop. Times change during production. So I thought about offering an episodic format, like a streamed drama, where an episode is produced and released. GZ should be an experiment.”
That way, after an episode came out, he could have gotten direct feedback from his audience to take into account when working on subsequent episodes.
He concluded, “However, a lot of people seemed to expect that Ground Zeroes would be a ‘complete game’ once it was released, and they didn’t get it. I have a feeling it was too early.”
