The year 2023 should actually mean the big return of the games and entertainment fair E3 in Los Angeles. After a hail of cancellations from major publishers, the fair itself is in question.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3 for short, has had a tough few years. After many years as the most important games fair, the concept wobbled and Corona gave the fair the coup de grace. In 2020 and 2022 the fair was completely canceled due to the pandemic, in 2021 it only took place in digital form. This year, the trade fair wanted to start again with a new operator, but that is now apparently in question.
The reason for this is that many well-known publishers, including Microsoft, Nintendo and most recently Ubisoft, have canceled their participation – Ubisoft wants to start its own event before E3. It is also rumored by Sony that the Playstation manufacturer is not interested in participating. With all three console manufacturers and one major publisher, a number of driving forces would of course be eliminated.
VGC editor Andy Robinson now claims to have heard unpleasant reports from around the fair that speak in favor of canceling E3. “It’s often hard to separate fact from speculation about E3, but unsurprisingly I don’t hear anything good. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if it were canceled this week – but I hope that’s not the case. I feel so sorry for those responsible who did everything that was asked of them,” Robinson said Twitter.
It remains to be seen what decision ReedPop will make. The organizer, known for EGX, New York Comic Con and PAX East, had only taken over responsibility for E3 from ESA and probably had little interest in lying on its nose at the restart. However, an official statement is still pending.
Whether E3 happens or not, June won’t be short of gaming events, which have mostly taken hold since the pandemic. In addition to the now announced Ubisoft Forward on June 12, Microsoft has already announced a showcase. To be more precise, even two, because in June there should also be an event that revolves entirely around Starfield. In addition, the Summer Game Fest, which has established itself as the June Announcement Festival for the last few years, will also be held again.
