According to the South Korean edition of The Elec, Samsung Display will start producing OLED panels for the iPhone 15 in May, a month earlier than previously planned. The fact is that another of the suppliers – the Chinese BOE, which received an order to produce panels for “classic” iPhones, cannot yet provide the required quality of its products.

The OLED panels that are planned to equip the standard iPhone 15 are almost identical to those used on the iPhone 14 today – with the exception that the new version uses a round camera cutout instead of the usual notch. The trouble is that BOE can’t deal with light leaking through this cutout and missed the chance to be one of Apple’s first suppliers for the iPhone 15. Whereas LCDs have problems with backlight isolation, OLEDs have the display itself glowing. , and BOE cannot block the light source well, which will interfere with the operation of the camera and sensors.
The use of Samsung Display products for the iPhone 15 was intended before, but now the deadline has been postponed due to the failure of BOE. For more expensive versions of the iPhone 15, Samsung will start production of panels in June, as planned. It is known that the standard display models for the iPhone 15 use LTPS TFT technology, while the Pro and Max variants use LTPO TFT. Meanwhile, LTPO TFT for iPhone 15 will be launched for Pro and Max models by LG, also in June.
Just because Samsung Display starts production earlier doesn’t mean BOE won’t cooperate. According to The Elec sources, the company is tackling the light leak problem and could start shipping for the iPhone 15 within a year.
