Half-Life Alyx on Steam Deck? Impossible, you say, but GB_2 Development Team seems to have succeeded. The author of the NoVR mod for the masterpiece Valve has in fact confirmed, in a new update on the continuation of the work and on the Early Access release, that the mod manages to run smoothly even on Valve’s small portable console. The team’s goal has been to make installation and accessibility of Half-Life Alyx easier than ever.
Currently the game is perfectly playable for 7 of the 11 total chapters of which it is composed, and the remaining chapters will be completed from week to week. The release of the full version should not be long in coming, therefore. In the future, additional mechanics will be added and the Half-Life Alyx hud will replace that of HL2.
“The NoVR Mod aims to allow anyone to be able to play this amazing game without a VR headset. It’s the most accessible, flexible mod to play HLA without VR! For those with health issues, motion sickness, and other limitations that prevent them from using it in VR, this is a great alternative! It’s also a great way to replay the game at your leisure. With its ease of installation (no drivers!), it makes gaming more accessible than ever,” revealed the modder.
Exactly, no drivers will be needed in order to play the game without VR. The installation will be very easy. First of all, it will be enough to create a copy of the game bought on Steam and then download the mod that you will find at the bottom of the page. Once this is done, you will need to copy the “game” folder into Alyx’s and add the launch options to the properties -nov e – vsync.
For Steam Deck owners, just change the resolution in the launcher options by adding the following options: -console -vconsole -w 1280 -h 800. The modder has also created a custom layout for the console, with keys already mapped and which can still be modified at will. The game manages to run at 1200×800 with Ultra settings and 60fps, and the battery lasts about 3 ore.
A similar attempt was made two years ago by another modder.
