Netflix is working to bring its video game service to TVs, expanding the list of potential gaming devices beyond smartphones and tablets. In the code of the Netflix application, references to games intended for TV were found, as well as a mention of using a smartphone as a controller.
“To play on your TV, you need a controller. Do you want to use this phone as a game controller?” – such text was discovered by application developer Steve Moser.
Since 2021, Netflix Games has been running on iPhone, iPad and Android devices for which games such as Into the Dead 2: Unleashed, Stranger Things 3: The Game and Card Blast have been released. On Apple devices, games are released individually through the App Store to meet the company’s requirements, but they can also be played through the Netflix app and require a subscription to the streaming service.
The idea is to expand the Netflix library available on the TV screen to help keep customers in the face of churn and rising rates. Netflix has previously indicated that it wants to bring games to more devices and is working on an expanded cloud gaming service without going into details. The plan to launch a cloud gaming service on TVs would potentially allow users to stream games over the internet.
Such an approach in the future could turn Netflix Games into a full-fledged competitor to existing gaming cloud services. The presence of indications in the application code does not yet indicate the final plans, but it definitely sheds light on the direction of the service development.
