It turned out that this is not a new, but an old character. In a way.
The Vanity Fair editors have published a large article about Secret Invasion, the Marvel series in which Nick Fury deals with the Skrulls who quietly made their way to Earth. The publication posted several frames of the series and shared new details of the show.
In Secret Invasion, Nick Fury doesn’t know who is friend and who is foe. It is only clear that the Skrulls are trying to discreetly replace leaders around the world. In the nineties, when Fury first encountered the Skrulls, they were promised to find a new home. At first everything was fine, but then some Skrulls got tired of waiting. A group of extremists appeared who decided to take control. It is their operation that Nick Fury is now fighting. Nick Fury still supports Talos, but among the extremists is his daughter G’ia – played by Emilia Clarke. We already know the girl: little G’ia appeared in the Captain Marvel movie. G’ia has a difficult relationship with her father, Emilia Clarke compares her character to a punk and explains that it’s hard to stop fighting if you grow up during the incessant battles. The creators of the series were inspired by spy shows like Homeland and The Americans, where it is not entirely clear who can be trusted. Fury does not trust almost anyone, with only one exception: Maria Hill, his old S.H.I.E.L.D. subordinate. When Fury went into the shadows, it was Hall who had to deal with various crises, and she was not happy about it. Fury did not get in touch with Hill for a very long time, and when he showed up, he spoke about problems with the Skrulls. For Maria, this crisis came as a surprise. Trying to deal with the crisis, Fury gets in touch with representatives of the intelligence services of several countries around the world. In particular, Nick attracts CIA agent Everett Ross, played by Martin Freeman. Rhodes, who became the closest adviser to the US President, and an unnamed MI6 agent with whom Nick Fury once had an affair will also appear in the series; the agent is played by Olivia Colman. Nick Fury doesn’t wear an eye patch, but there’s a chance she’ll return. The lack of a bandage, a beard and general shabbiness show that Fury is also vulnerable. In the series, Fury will be haunted by the “sins of the past”: both people and the Skrulls doubt him. But Nick will try to figure everything out on his own, without calling for help from fellow superheroes. According to Samuel L. Jackson, there is a very good reason for this restraint.
Secret Invasion will begin airing on June 21st.
