Next step: cloud server
On March 30, 2023, the Bioware managers announced the next step in the “Tech Upgrade Initiative” on the official SWTOR website (buy now).
Measure number 1: The developers are preparing to move the live servers to AWS.Measure number 2: On April 3, 2023 (at 7:00 p.m.), Shae Vizla will be the first cloud test server to go live. The test is scheduled to last until April 18, 2023 (at 5:00 p.m.).
According to the developers, migrating to cloud-based servers offers the following advantages:
The technology allows improving the general gaming experience, for example in connectivity, pings, faster startup and better game performance. Backend updates, which are crucial for the further health and stability of the game, can be optimized more efficiently. The resources for maintaining the current Systems can be reassigned to focus on improving the gaming experience. Developers will be able to take advantage of and incorporate updated technologies such as newer hardware, software and graphics. Upon completion, SWTOR will be able to expand its server capacity to easily accommodate new ones to accept players.

The test server in the cloud brings with it differences from the normal test servers: All players can log in regardless of account type, and unlike the public test server there will be no separate download. All participants can create a new character or copy an existing character on Shae Vizla from the start of the test phase.
In the course of the test, the participating players should primarily keep an eye on the performance of the server. How high is the ping? How is the performance compared to the other servers? Is group content working correctly? How long does it take for the character to land in a Flashpoint? How smooth is the journey to any place in the universe? If all goes well, we could soon be playing SWTOR in the cloud.
