Hellboy
Hellboy (2004) is an adaptation by Guillermo del Toro, from the comics by Mike Mignola. This first film is inspired by the first volume of the work published by Dark Horse: The Seeds of Destruction. We follow the demon baptized Hellboy (Ron Perlman), raised on Earth to fight the evil forces. He teams up with the telepath Abe Sapien and fire-controlling Liz Sherman. The production received a very favorable opinion with a score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes upon its release. A sequel, Hellboy II: Les Légions d’Or Maudites, was produced four years later, again by del Toro.
Minority Report
Directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 2002, Minority Report is an adaptation of the eponymous short story by Philip K. Dick. The story takes place in 2054, in the midst of dystopia. Some mutant humans, the Pre-Cogs, can predict crime with a unique gift. This has allowed the city of Washington to reduce its crime to zero. However one day, the head of the unit John Anderton (Tom Cruise), warned by a Pre-Cogs, learns that he is going to kill a man. He does not know the victim in question, nor the reason for this murder. He flees to escape the system which has the order to arrest him. The film was a success which allowed him to be nominated for the César for best foreign film.
Ong-bak 2 / Ong-bak 3
The film was released in 2008 and is directed by Tony Jaa. In Thailand, the young slave Tien is saved from the fangs of a crocodile by the mysterious Chernang, commander of the bandits of Garuda. This one will teach him the martial arts. As an adult, Tien has become a great warrior, but has a desire for revenge to satisfy. His target is Lord Rajasena, responsible for his past misfortunes. In the third installment released in 2012, Tien must take revenge on his oppressed people. The first movie is not required to enjoy Ong-bak 2 and 3.
The Patriot: The Path to Freedom
The Patriot: The Road to Freedom a film directed by Roland Emmerich and released in 2000. It reconstructs, with certain freedoms, the war of independence of the United States. We follow Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a war veteran, widower and father of seven children. One day, his eldest son Gabriel enlists in the army and it is already too late to stop him. The character of Mel Gibson is inspired by several revolutionaries: Andrew Pickens, Thomas Sumter and Francis Marion. Despite its historical context, the real story is totally fictional and focuses instead on the relationship between father and son.
Ultimate Game
Released in 2009, Ultimate Game, directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, takes place in the near future where video games have evolved enormously to the point that they allow humans to be controlled. Gerard Butler embodies a participant against his will in an online game, where the objective is to kill each other. Only, once in the game, he is the victim of a set-up and will do everything to escape. The film received rather mediocre reviews, but it was praised for trying to tackle a theme still uncommon in cinema at the time: video games.
