Survival fans have been able to download Sons of the Forest Early Access from Steam since February 23rd. So far, despite some missing content, the game has been pretty well received by players. The developers at Endnight Games would like to further develop the successor to The Forest, which was finally released in 2018, over the next few months. In addition to further building and crafting options, the story should also be gradually expanded. Towards the end of the year we expect the release of the console ports alongside the final release.
Although the lore of the island adventure holds a number of secrets, it has been revealed relatively briefly and quickly so far. But the island also offers some secret locations away from the story where we can find bizarre or useful gadgets. We have therefore sent a team from our editorial team to look for more or less meaningful activities. The result was a kind of Olympic Games in which colleagues compete.
Discipline 1: archery
The editors Chris and Michi and intern Tobi start their unique event with a classic competition. Archery has been part of the program since the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 and can also be easily implemented in Sons of the Forest.
To do this, we attach a found target to a self-built wooden wall and walk back a few meters to create the same conditions for everyone. Everyone can then shoot at the target three times with the modern bow and the player with the most points wins the first discipline.
Intern Tobi presents very well. An arrow even lands almost directly in the middle of the 10. In addition, there are two more six points, which means that the two competitors have to top a 22.
Next it’s Michi’s turn: With three rather mediocre shots and 14 points, he ranks in second place with a quite clear gap. There has to be a lot more to come in the next few rounds for a gold medal.
Finally, Chris stands at the marker and shoots his three arrows towards the target. With four, six and seven points, he doesn’t manage to match Tobi’s performance, but he secures the silver medal in archery with 17 points.
Medal table after a discipline:
Tobi: Gold 1x, Silber 0x, Bronze 0xChris: Gold 0x, Silber 1x, Bronze 0xMichi: Gold 0x, Silber 0x, Bronze 1x
What: PC Games
Discipline 2: javelin throw
The second competition continues with another classic Olympic discipline. Javelin throwing is said to have been a popular discipline since ancient times. Also on the island of Sons of the Forest, spears can be easily made from sticks and duct tape.
The rules of our triathlon are very simple: there are three rounds and each participant has one throw per round. There are three points for the furthest throw, the second best gets two and the last place one point. At the end the points are added up. If you step over the second line at the start, you get an invalid attempt in the statistics.
A close exchange of blows develops, which Tobi wins again in the end with two round victories. The silver medal goes to Michi, who wins at least one round and this time Chris brings up the rear.
Medal table after two disciplines:
Tobi: Gold 2, Silver 0, Bronze 0Chris: Gold 0, Silver 1, Bronze 1Michi: Gold 0, Silver 1, Bronze 1
What: PC Games
Discipline 3: Triathlon
Let’s continue with a fairly young Olympic sport, the triathlon. Medals in this discipline have only been awarded since the 2000 Games in Sydney. Since there’s no way to cobble together a bike in Endnight Games’ survival title, our competitors go back to the target after the run and swim. The final shot, however, is fired with a crossbow.
