While many fighting game fans are impatiently awaiting the release of Street Fighter 6, another flagship license of the genre is due to return soon: Tekken, with its eighth installment. This new title should include several welcome additions, especially for those who want to play with friends, regardless of their platform.
Crossplay is a big yes
Fighting game fans will soon be in for a treat with the upcoming release of Street Fighter 6the arrival of Mortal Kombat 12 scheduled for this year, the announcement there is little Budokai Tenkaichi 4 and finally the approach of Tekken 8. Regarding this last game, we know for the moment little. The release date has not yet been shared by Bandai Namco, but at least we know that the title is planned for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
In the absence of official communication, some Internet users have turned to Twitter and directly questioned Katuhiro Harada, the director of this new opus, who has been working on the license for almost thirty years. The director was quick to answer and straightforwardly answered several questions, including that of crossplay. Katsuhiro Harada confirmed it, Tekken 8 will include crossplay that will allow players to compete online, regardless of their respective platforms.
Katsuhiro Harada nous en dit plus
If all goes well, crossplay will indeed be effective on Tekken 8. Katsuhiro Harada confirmed it on Twitter, before saying more about this feature. In particular, he admitted that he was already looking to implement crossplay on the previous generation of consoles.
Crossplay? Of course I will.
BTW
When the previous generation consoles were released, I had already proposed crossplay between the two platformers. However, at that time, they were at odds with each other over their mutual interests (and P2P security issue) & repeatedly refused. https://t.co/I8b38YfePh— Katsuhiro Harada (@Harada_TEKKEN) April 9, 2023

According to Katsuhiro Harada, the decision not to implement crossplay on Tekken 7 depended mainly at the time on Microsoft and Sony, who would have refused the functionality because of misunderstandings and the potential risks that would represent the P2P connection, on which the multiplayer of Tekken is based.
The director went on to say that there are still “many hurdles” to overcome to democratize crossplay, but the feature will still be there regardless.
Remember when they announced they were open to crossplay a few years ago? But in reality, they didn’t actively support third parties at the time, and the hurdles were actually quite high.
There are still some problems left, but it will be possible. https://t.co/8riL6p2lbf

For the moment, no release date for Tekken 8 has yet been communicated. The game is currently undergoing a series of internal tests. As said before, the title is planned for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
