Frankenstein has had numerous iterations on the big screen, but each film released has had one bar very present at all times: the 1931 film directed by James Whale.
The film, starring Colin Clive like Dr. Henry Frankenstein and Boris Karloff like the towering monster it brings to life, it is one of those horror movie masterpieces from the years when talkies were still in their infancy.
In the world of collecting, there is a whole market for material from old movies. These pieces can fetch crazy numbers at auction, and the rarer they are, the better.
This brings us to a strange poster of the movie from Colin Clive and Boris Karloff’s 1931 Frankenstein that was recently discovered in an attic and only seven copies were made.
A rare Frankenstein poster that is a real treasure
The original posters to promote movies are valuable pieces for collectors, since, with few exceptions, only a handful are printed so that theaters have the appropriate publicity for each film.
As we have said, in the case of the Frankenstein poster that has been discovered, only seven copies of that model were printed in that specific size.
This makes sense when we see the price estimate of the auction that has been opened at Heritage Auctions, where it is estimated that the poster can be around 150,000 or even the 300,000 dollars when the auction ends in a little over two weeks.
Two decades ago, the same auction site sold another copy just like it for $189,750, which is where that estimate comes from. As of this writing, the auction has reached $77,500 worth of bids.
Frankenstein is one of the most memorable movies in movie history, and the crazy price that this poster that has come up for auction can fetch is proof of the value these pieces have for collectors.
