The Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 are both expected to launch later this year. However, a new leak from South Korea has indicated that Google’s first foldable smartphone will have a more advanced screen than the Galaxy Z Fold 5. We explain why.
Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 expected to be unveiled in August Google has yet to confirm when it will launch the Pixel Fold
The Elec reported that Google’s first Pixel Fold will benefit from Samsung’s Oled M13 components. The source believes that Samsung could choose to include the current Oled M12 on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 5, rather than equipping it with the next-gen Oled.
The reason behind Samsung’s decision has not been specified, but it could be because Samsung foldables will ship earlier than the Pixel Fold. There may also be insufficient supply of new materials to meet the anticipated sales volumes of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Flip 5.

How will the Google Pixel Fold be superior to the Galaxy Z Fold 5?
At the time of publication, it is still unknown what the differences or advantages of the Oled M13 are compared to the previous generation. Take for example the Galaxy Z Fold 4 that we tested.
It was equipped with a more efficient and brighter panel than its predecessor. Presumably, the new model should offer improvements in these two key areas, although this will have to be confirmed when the Pixel Fold arrives.
Apart from Google, Apple also uses Samsung Oled panels. The iPhone 14 Pro (review) and iPhone 14 Pro Max (review) feature the advanced M12 display, and it’s rumored that the entire iPhone 15 lineup will feature similar technology, according to a trusted source. Additionally, the iPhone 16 is expected to move away from the current Oled version.
As for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Flip 5, they are expected to be announced in August 2023, alongside the Galaxy Tab S9 and Galaxy Watch 6.
A new pair of Galaxy Buds 3 earphones could be presented at the same time as these devices. The latest developments regarding Google’s Pixel Fold appear to point to a similar timeline.
