This year’s Time 100 list of the most influential people of the year has been released. It features From Software boss Hidetaka Miyazaki after the success of “Elden Ring”.
Every year since 2004, Time Magazine has published a list of the 100 most influential people. And this year, a name that is very familiar to us can be found on it. We’re talking about From Software President and Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki, who caused a stir last year with his open-world role-playing game “Elden Ring”.
This makes Miyazaki just the second video game developer in history to make Time Magazine’s illustrious list. In 2007, only Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto had managed to do this. The legendary developer who created Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox and more was included in the Time 100 at the height of the Nintendo Wii.
Miyazaki’s games evoke a feeling of intoxication
Besides wrote Naughty Dogs Neil Druckmann (“The Last of Us”, “Uncharted”) the profile for Miyazaki in the Time 100. In the category “Innovator” it says, among other things:
“The first time I played one of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games, I was miserable. I kept dying on the first opponent. But as I slowed my pace, paying attention to the details, it suddenly clicked. I managed to defeat the opponent and progress further in the game. I earned my progress and felt a kind of rush! And as I progressed in the game, I was much more conscious and careful about how I explored this world. And for that, the world rewarded me with excitement, beauty, and surprises.”
For this reason, “Elden Ring” is a great ambassador for video games and the unique feelings they can leave in a player. According to Druckmann, Miyazaki makes the players feel like they’ve achieved something. This is thanks to both him and his team, as they are uncompromising in their approach. Furthermore, the Japanese developer refrains from explaining both the mechanics and the lore down to the smallest detail. Instead, he challenges players to figure all of this out for themselves.
