Action fans in particular should have fun with it and we’ll tell you whether it’s worth taking a closer look.
DOOM Eternal (PS4, PS5)
Playing time: ~15 hours (story); ~27 hours (complete)
With the reboot simply called “DOOM”, developer studio id Software restarted its legendary first-person shooter series in 2016 and continued the restart four years later with “DOOM Eternal”. Once again, as the iconic Doom Slayer, you must confront powerful demons and expertly dismantle them into their individual parts using a huge arsenal of weapons. You return to earth overrun by hordes of demons and you are now the world’s last hope.
The greatest strength of the shooter is undoubtedly its brute gameplay or gunplay, which is almost perfect. The various weapons differ significantly from each other and each have a wonderful impact. It just feels great to push the potential of the arsenal in the bloody skirmishes, move smoothly across the battlefield and unleash the fierce finishers. All this is rounded off by a very good level design, one of the best soundtracks of recent years and a sometimes surprisingly well told story.
In short, one of the best first-person shooters of recent years awaits you here, which not only looks great, but also plays even better. If you have even a slight weakness for these types of games, you should definitely give DOOM Eternal a try. A gaming experience awaits you here that you will remember for a long time.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits (PS4, PS5)
Playing time: ~10 hours (story); ~20 hours (complete)
With its very first trailer, the small indie game “Kena: Bridge of Spirits” cast a spell on all players. The action-adventure should have cast a spell over many with its charming look, which promised a playable animated film. In the game, we slip into the role of the young spirit guide Kena, who embarks on a journey to a special shrine. Along the way, she helps restless spirits to find their peace and is also supported by the cuddly Rot, little spirit beings who help our protagonist on this adventure.
A playful mix of well-known genre greats awaits you here: Kena, like Lara Croft, can climb smoothly, dish out a bow or quarterstaff in battle like Aloy, and like her colleagues, she explores an expansive world in which various challenges are faced , puzzles and collectibles await. Kena always gets help from her Rot, who want to be used wisely to kill different types of enemies or to solve puzzle passages. While Ember Labs didn’t reinvent the wheel with their debut, all of the mechanics work well, mesh nicely, and are fun. By the way, don’t let the cute look fool you, the boss fights are pretty crisp.
All in all, “Kena: Bridge of Spirits” is an all-round successful, really good action-adventure that lives in particular from its extremely chic graphics and the atmospheric soundtrack. The title does have its weaknesses, such as some choppy animations and the fairly predictable story, but despite these few flaws, the debut of the small development studio is definitely successful. If you’ve been eyeing the game for a while, now’s the perfect time to finally catch up on this little indie hit.
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (PS4, PS5)
Playing time: ~19 hours (story); ~24 hours (complete)
With “Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom”, a legendary game series returned in 2018 with a new spin-off, which also featured series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa. Protagonist Jin has to save the kingdom of Monster World while fighting all kinds of powerful monsters and bosses, overcoming dangerous traps and uncovering various secrets. Of course, to help the protagonist, you can gradually improve his equipment and skills.
The game lives above all from its versatile main character, who can transform into different animals, which opens up new playful possibilities for you. Depending on your chosen form, not only the abilities but also the equipment will change from time to time. Because you can quickly switch between your forms to combine their benefits, the small bounces in particular always remain exciting and entertaining. But the puzzles also benefit from this and require you to line up your powers in a meaningful way. You experience all of this in a wonderful comic look.
The greatest strengths of the charming adventure are in particular its well thought-out level design in combination with the fun and motivating gameplay that doesn’t get boring even after several hours of play. Here you not only get a declaration of love to a real gaming classic, but also an all-round successful Jump’n’Run experience with which you can definitely have a really great time.
