The characters of the Super Mario universe are not necessarily ultra-developed and yet, some very singular character traits do exist. This is perfectly the case of Luigi who seems to have a weakness… for wedding dresses and other accoutrements of the fairer sex. Yes yes.
From plumbing to fashion shows
When you play the different Mario games, you can’t say that the script and the writing of the characters hold a preponderant place: for decades, Nintendo has remained relatively on the surface and besides, we don’t really complain about it. . However, some faces have unique character traits and sometimes even unsuspected attractions. Like Luigi, for example.
In Super Mario Odyssey’s Ballon World mini-game, if the player equips Mario with a wedding dress and goes off to talk to Luigi, the latter will look a little taken aback. “Whoa, bro, you’re getting married? And you didn’t tell me? Oh, you’re just wearing the suit? For fun, basically? Huh.”
A reaction that has generated nearly 17,000 likes on Twitter and 1,400 retweets at the time of writing, and this in just a few days. But it is especially by digging a little that the case becomes interesting.
Luigi’s reaction to Mario’s wedding outfits. His dialogue is the same regardless of whether Mario is wearing his Tuxedo, Bowser’s Tuxedo, or the Bridal Gown.

In replies to the tweet in question, a user specifies that this is clearly the first time that Luigi shows his weakness for dresses. Not that he likes them over others; let’s just say he prefers to wear them… for him. In a comic strip, he exchanges outfits with Princess Peach and admits, for example, to liking his friend’s pink outfit, even hesitating to give it back to her.
In another video game, Luigi is even caught raving about dresses, saying “they look comfy…” In another register, there is also a Super Mario chess game where the Queen is neither Peach and Daisy… but Mario. Another reference to her coquetry? It’s likely since Nintendo itself slipped a mention to Luigi in the description of the Super Crown in one of the titles: “Sorry Luigi, only Toadette can use this item!”
Digging further, we can still see several references to Luigi’s attraction to dresses, when he does not simply wear them in certain works. A priori therefore, when he is surprised to see his brother dressed like this in Super Mario Odyssey, it may be because he wants more than anything to borrow it… rather than attend his potential wedding. Maybe.
