Google Maps is an excellent application for navigating without getting lost. However, it does much more than that. In some cases it looks more like a social network where you can even follow people and see some suggestions. However, there are many more features that are usually more hidden. An example of this is a function that allows you to organize and save your favorite places on Google Maps as a way to prepare for your holidays. We will then explain how you can do it and it is actually quite simple.
Google Maps: prepare your vacation and save your favorites now!
First start by opening Google Maps.
Then find a place you want to save to your favorite places list.
Then, after locating the place you want to add, just move the labels to the side below the title of the place until you find the Save option. Then we have to press Save.
Next, we have the option to Save to a list. By default, Google Maps already comes with some sections created, namely Favorites, Starred Places, Want to Visit or Travel Plans. However, we can also create our own lists. For example, Good Restaurants, Places to Avoid and so on.
If you want to create your own list, just press the + button. Then assign a name to the list. Then you can add a description as well.
However, it is possible to create a private, shared or public list. The last two options are interesting if you want other people to have access to the list.
Then just click on Create and that’s it.
However there is also the possibility of creating our own favorite maps from Google Maps.

Then click on Create a new map.
However, in the new window you will have to give the map a name by clicking on Untitled map. Then you will see that roughly in the middle and below the search box you have several options.
One of them is to place the famous pins to identify places. So, click there to add the pin to a certain zone. Then add a description. When finished, click Save. This “layer” corresponding to one of the points will appear on the left side of the screen.
You can customize the pin you have placed in a very simple way. Change the color, add tags, whatever you think makes sense to make it easier to identify. You can also use icons to indicate what kind of place it is.
Add directions on custom maps
However, another interesting feature is the possibility to add directions.
It has the icon alluding to traffic arrows where you will have to click for that option to appear. Then just indicate point A (origin) and point B (destination). Note that you can enter multiple addresses. Example, Restelo to Ericeira. Then Ericeira to Bar da Praia.
However, it is also possible to customize everything and anything else.
Add different route types on custom maps
Another interesting aspect is that it is possible to add different types of routes. That is, add a route by car, on foot or by bicycle.
So when the map is finished you will have to share it. So click on the three dots that appear in front of the name of the map. Then it is possible to copy the map, open it, move it to the trash and it is even possible to embed it on your website. As you can see it is fantastic to use in events.
However, on the smartphone it is exactly the same and as such if you have an Android device, look for the My Maps app in the Play Store. Then just download and install.
When you open the App you will receive a small tutorial on how to use this application.
