The new equipment system in patch 10.1 of WoW: Dragonflight is quite sophisticated and as a player you have to look twice to understand it. In the end, however, you simply collect flying stones from all possible sources and refer to a cheat sheet if necessarywhere to get which shadowflame crests to upgrade your equipment as much as possible.
According to the developers, coats of arms and co. will also accompany us in upcoming patches and addons if the new equipment system turns out to be a success. One of the biggest sources of error in the system, which apparently nobody thought of, reveals itself directly on day 1 of season 2. The new gear system and the loot rules introduced in Dragonflight don’t get along.
LFR item upgraded too much? Then you can’t roll for NHC loot…
Redditor Arkavien shares his experience at the start of Season 2 on the WoW Reddit forum. He couldn’t roll for tier set gloves in his NHC raid because he was previously in the LFR and got gloves there that he got directly from item levels 418 also upgraded.

The Aberrus normal mode pet set gloves are item level 418. The new WoW loot rules: Dragonflight however, state that a player cannot roll an item if they have a higher level gear in said item slot than the item being rolled.

WoW: Enchanted Shadow Flame Crests – more item levels for crafted items
With the Enchanted Shadowflame Crests, we can give crafted equipment in WoW a higher item level!
Get penalized for upgrading
That’s doubly annoying. If you take a look at the cheat sheet linked above, you will see that NHC loot can be upgraded higher than LFR loot via the new gear system. The same can happen with NHC and Heroic items as well: If you upgrade an NHC item too much, you may not roll on some heroic items.
Admittedly, we didn’t think of that when we tested the new system. However, it cannot be in the spirit of the inventor to punish players for upgrading loot. The Redditor describes the biggest mistake of the system: not being able to get essential items because you wanted to strengthen your character.
That is a big problem. As Reddit users suggested in the post above, the loot rules should only look at the item’s base item level… although that could also lead to problematic situations. With all the nice considerations and rules that the developers have come up with for the new WoW (buy now) patch 10.1 gear system, nobody seems to have included Dragonflight’s new loot rules, which are already the biggest on Day 1 of Season 2 Uncover weaknesses in the system.
