This year, Google celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Pixel series. Since 2016, this has also included Android smartphones, which are supplied with software updates for a comparatively long time. In line with the anniversary, Google presented three new devices from the Pixel series at the I/O developer fair. These include the Pixel Fold, the Pixel 7a and the Pixel Tablet, which is a competitor to the Echo Show with Amazon Alexa.
Google Pixel 7a hands-on test: How does the mid-range model differ from the Pixel 7?
The Google Pixel 7 and the Pro version have been available since October 2022. Now follows with the Pixel 7a a cheaper version. Buyers do not have to make any compromises when it comes to the SoC. All current Google smartphones use the in-house Tensor G2. Compared to the predecessor Pixel 6a, the 7a has been given a new OLED touchscreen that has a frame rate of 90 Hz instead of 60 Hz, so that content is displayed smoothly. Instead of Gorilla Glass Victus, the screen of the Pixel 7a is only protected by the cheaper Gorilla Glass 3. Unfortunately, according to the hands-on test of the Golem colleagues, the fingerprint sensor in the Pixel 7a often needs several attempts to recognize fingers. The camera on the back, on the other hand, can surprise positively. In addition to a super wide-angle lens with 13 megapixels, a main camera with 64 megapixels is installed and thus has significantly more pixels than the predecessor. Purely in terms of sharpness, there are no significant differences to the Pixel 7 Pro, but only the Pro model has a telephoto lens. With the super wide-angle lens, quality differences can be seen in the magnification, so that the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro perform better here.
In order to realize the price of 510 euros, the back is made of plastic instead of glass, only the camera sits in a metal bar. The Pixel 7 now costs 600 euros, the Pixel 7 Pro is available from just under 760 euros. Google now also has a competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 in its range, which will be presented in more detail on the next page.
